Intermittant internet problem

Hi! I'm hoping someone may have a bright idea about this. My parents have a problem with their internet connection. They have been through the process of contacting the ISP many times over the last 2 years, had an engineer out, had the line monitered for 4 days (during which over 100 downtimes were recorded) and gonr through 5 modems. They have overhead cables if that helps. I won't mention the service provider, they keep an eye on these boards and have no desire to be told to simply contact them as my parents have been on the phone to them for hours over the last 2 days and still cannot get the internet to work..AGAIN! Seems to off for days, sometimes come back, other times no joy till new modem sent. It can't be the case that all these modems were faulty so I was wondering if any techy people had any idea what could be causing this. They really do need their e-mails and they are getting embarresed having t explain, yet again, that they are offline at the moment. Help please. TIA Smile

Please excuse me stating the obvious, but have they tried changing ISP so that they can narrow down whether it's a provider issue or to do with their infrastructure?

That's okay lazydog I would have said the same if it were not that their neighbour and myself have the same provider and have never experienced these problems. Geeks at the ISP are now suggesting tht it is a problem with their Macaffee software that is causing this Hmm.

It's really tough to diagnose these without seeing the machine. Is the machine wireless or wired? If it's wireless it could be the distance from the machine to the router, or a faulty wireless network card.
Could be phone sockets or cabling within the house. Could be PC issue.

You need a geek to come out and fix it.

Thanks for that Motion. They took a look at the site..uninstalled Mcaffee re-booted then re-installed. Seems to working for now but still does not explain the on-going problems. Ah well at least they are back online for now. Thanks heaps motion.
