DH trying to figure it out, but he's a bit stumped as he can't Google the answer Wink

Any ideas what this could be?
WiFi ok as this iPod and DH's iPhone both ok.
Last connected on sat am

Is it picking up the wifi at all? Have you taken laptop elsewhere and connected it to another wifi or local area network recently?

Hi Pink

Apparently the wifi is connecting, it's the Internet that won't connect
DH thinks it's a firewall thing, but it has not been connected to anything else or left the house since sat am

Any thoughts?

my old laptop had a switch on the side to allow for an internet connection - does his have similar that could have accidentally been switched off?

hattifattner · 20/08/2012 23:30

Have you tried the old standby - swwitch off and switch on again?

Failing that....

Are you phones able to connect to internet (to rule out problem with your ISP)

If so, then use system restore to go back to a previous version of windows when you could connect. You will not lose any documents.

Have you tried rebooting the router? (Sorry, it's the obvious one....don't mean to be patronising!) Sometimes they get confused about which machine has which IP and is allowed to do what and stop letting you on the internet.

Firewall could've automatically updated and changed a setting in the process, this is easily tested by disabling the firewall (for testing purposes only obviously, turn it back on as soon as you've figured out if it makes a difference).

"wifi is connecting, it's the Internet that won't connect"

Is this Vista or Windows 7 ?
Which ISP ?

Have sometimes seen this when Windows cannot reach the DNS systems (DNS is used to translate www.mumsnet.com into an IP address of 4 numbers). If Windows cannot get a response from them, it assumes internet link is down (not necessarily the case), and reports it as down...

Do you use the laptop only from home with this wi-fi ? (as it may be possible to override the DNS info from the router to some public DNS service like OpenDNS, and may avoid this 'error' where Windows says "no internet connection" when there's no problem for the iPhone or iPod and Windows is fibbing).

Thanks all, DH is going to try these tonight

He was impressed with the helpful replies
I feel kind of justified about the time I spend on MN now!

Turns out it was a firewall thing. Appears to be sorted now

Thanks for all your ideas
