Title says it all really ,have been looking at the hundreds of second hand ipads on ebay/macbooty etc and wondering of second hand would be fine or whether if I want one I should really stick out for new.Apple never seems to have any refurbs in stock although I keep checking

Depends on the price difference. I'd be happy enough to get a 2nd hand ipad2 from eBay if the seller is reputable and I paid him/her via Paypal.

But if there's not a big price difference, I'd get it new and be done with it.

Is there a branch of CEX near to you? You could take in some old mobile phones/computer and trade, or just buy a second hand one from there.

outtolunchagain · 13/08/2012 13:45

Well it started because I was looking at an ipad2 but new you can only get 16gb ,second hand 32gb seem to go for around £330.The difference in price to a new ipad3 32g is quite large and everyone seems to imply that 16gb isn't really big enough .

How can you tell if the seller is reputable ,amazed that some are boxed and unopened ,am i right to be suspicious ?

I work in CeX, the prices are okay, they're tested before being stocked and you get a 12 month warranty. I'd pick your branch carefully though, they're franchises. I know the staff in ours are reasonable but have heard some horror stories. And I wouldn't buy a high value item online.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2012 13:49

From CEX, I mean. Although TBH I'd be picky about ebay etc as well as it's effectively a private sale, not much comeback if you do have a problem with it.

I will show my geekery and recommend AVforums.com. They have a really active classified section, which is where I got my iPhone and the majority of the hifi stuff I own. People tend to be very accurate at describing the goods, and I've never had any problems (and they have a system in place for if a problem does arrive). Pricing is, I think, fair, as everyone is pretty technologically savvy.

Hmm maybe I am just going to have to wait a bit longer , I feel guilty spending money on a luxury but would just like something for me.

Bertie You don't work in the Leeds Cex do you? If you do I just want to say that everytime I have been in the staff have been really slow. Its almost as if they go to have a social life and serving customers takes second place. Also it doesn't look like anything's organized very well. The bit behind the counter just looks a mess, it often happens that the CD/DVD/Game cannot be found or if it is it takes forever for the assistant to find it. It needs to be closed for a couple of days so the staff can have a good sort out and tidy. Just a bit of constructive criticism there, I don't mean it to sound bad, just saying from a customers angle.

OTOH Darlington Cex is really good :)

and everyone seems to imply that 16gb isn't really big enough

Depends on what you want to do with it. I've a 16GB Ipad1 and only a couple of times have I ever come close to filling it. I've even taken it on a long haul flight loaded with videos (xvids).

If you plan on storing loads of apps/music & videos then yes it won't be enough. But if you are like me and just take with you what you want then you should be fine.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2012 14:19

Nope nowhere near Leeds, am further south :) TBH I notice a difference in how organised we are just depending on which manager/supervisor is running that day. It's a really delicate balance to cover everything and if it goes wrong it can all go tits up! Fun place to work though, really interesting.

outtolunchagain · 13/08/2012 14:24

Bertie I have to say the one where I live is a mess, full of long haired greasy teens on both side of the counter!!Have been in with my boys on a Sat you can queue easily for 40 mins to pay and the people behind the counter are in a squalid mess,I long to get in and start organising them!!

Word of warning I work for a slaes website and we get loads of scammers posting adverts for I Pads, I Pods, I Phones etc, if the price is looking too good to be true then it probably is!

DialsMavis · 13/08/2012 15:19

I wouldn't buy something that fragile and valuable without some form of warranty, saying that though, if I don't get a job in the next week or 2 I will be selling my ipad 2!

Try the Argos eBay outlet store or Amazon Warehouse Deals...?
