Can anyone help with Android Browser issue?

I'm trying to install Swype but their download says I am either not using Android, which I am, or that I do not have 'Mobile View' enabled in the browser, which is the standard Android browser, i.e. Google Chrome.

I cannot for the life of me see how to enable 'Mobile View' and Google searches are getting me no where!!

Anyone help>

Can you not download it from the apps store instead?

Tee2072 · 11/08/2012 21:37

It's in Beta, so it's not in the App store yet.

This is why I am much happier with my iPhone. All their apps work...

Of course, the Android tablet was 1/3 the price...

Thanks, I found that. It doesn't actually answer the question!

I also found another swiping keyboard that I like so I might just give up. There seems to be some indication that it doesn't work with tablets anyway.

Thanks again for trying!

Could you try a different browser?

LoonyRationalist · 12/08/2012 08:30

Might be that swype beta isn't compatible with your version of Android?

The reason android is better than apple is that we are grown up enough to be allowed to run beta apps ;-)

Tee2072 · 12/08/2012 08:44

Grin Loony

It's possible, Loony. Their documentation is very vague, they actually have no support for their beta version Hmm and therefore it's all users talking to users.

ItsAll they claim it only works if you're using the default browser to download it, which really makes no sense!

I've pretty much given up, although I'll keep an eye on the thread linked to above, just to see if their is a solution I'm missing.

As I said, I've found another swipe keyboard that works quite well.

Grr, there is a solution. Haven't finished my coffee yet!

'why I am much happier with my iPhone'

puzzled you'd get an Android tablet then, but being curious, which tablet and what version of Android is it ?

Can recommend SlideIt but the tablet I am using (Archos 70) uses part of the screen to give the controls (home, back, etc) and therefore on the Archos, the right-hand side doesn't display well (however, the default | Archos keyboard seems fine).

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 12/08/2012 16:03

Which version of Android are you running? Chrome is not the default browser, but it is available on ICS and Jelly Bean. If you are using the stock browser, Mobile View is under Menu>More>Settings, there's a toggle for it.

If it's a decent keyboard you're after, Go keyboard is a solid free one which supports swiping and also old school number pad style text keyboards as well as a ton of personalisation options. However, I can highly recommend Swift Key 3, it doesn't have the swiping, but it is second to none for predictions based on your previous usage, which personally I find infinitely quicker than swiping.

Tee2072 · 12/08/2012 16:08

Because I can't afford an iPad, NetworkGuy and I need a tablet as my arthritis makes holding a pen for any length of time impossible. I wasn't aware being happier with one product meant I was never allowed to use another. Hmm

I found SlideIT and I am using that instead.

It's ICS on an NATPC M0095. Cheap and cheerful! And the only browser on it is what looks to me like Chrome, even though it is just labeled 'browser'. There is nothing that says 'more' under menu, if you mean the drop down menu in the top right corner of the browser.

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 12/08/2012 17:30

Ah, ok, on ICS there's an option in that menu drop down for View Desktop Site, try toggling that on and off.

It could just be a compatibility issue as can be the case with lower end devices unfortunately.

Tee2072 · 12/08/2012 17:39

Yeah, I tried that Pedro, thanks.

I do think it's a compatibility issue and my friend who recommended Swype to begin with just posted to her FB that she updated it and now she hates it! So I guess I'm not missing much!!!! Grin
