Help ! Laptop screen flickered then went black this morning

I am at work at present, laptop is at home. I turned it on this morning, logged on, went onto google, then the screen flickered, flickered again then went completely black. The Caps lock lights and other lights were still on so there is power into the laptop.
I held the "on" button down and it powered off, turned it on again, it came up with the black screen and white writing with the options. I chose "start normally" and it went through the motions with the lights coming on but the screen is still black.
anyone any ideas ? its buggared isn't it

When you can,turn it off again,start it and make a note of what those options are,post them here and will advise further

So sorry I completely forgot I had posted here. My daughter didn't see my note about not using the Laptop and she turned it on and it was ok. I noticed last week though that in the bottom left hand corner where the time is that there is a small black patch that spreads the longer I am on it. The screen in that area and also the perimeter are also red red hot. We have been trying not to use it for more than about 20 mins at a time.
I asked a guy in our local PC shop and he thinks that it may be a liquid crystal leakage and I have to take it in for him to have a look at. Sounds ominous though doesn't it It isn't even 3 years old
