Is £165 a good deal for a used iPhone 3?

My old iPhone has died so I need to replace it. Have found one on gumtree and wondering if this sounds reasonable. Thanks.

Sounds expensive to me

Nospringflower · 31/05/2012 22:02

Just checked and it's 3GS 16gb. What is a good price? Checked on EBay and others on Gumtree and thought it seemed ok but checking here too.

I wouldn't buy a phone from Gumtree unless you are totally sure the phone is legit.

If it is stolen or even still tied to a contract then it can be blocked and you will be left with a rather expensive brick.

To be honest £165 is quite expensive for a 3GS. I reckon you can get one cheaper from eBay and if you pay by Paypal you are better protected in case something goes wrong.

I'm selling my daughter's 3GS next week and I am hoping to get about £150 for it from ebay and out of that I'd have to pay fees.

The other place to look at is CEX. They should have thousands of 3GS's in stock.

God no! I have one sat in a drawer (I'm keeping it for emergencies)... Orange wanted to buy it back for £48.

No. Call up your provider and see what they'll offer you. I did that, threatened to leave and got a free iPhone 4 from them to keep my custom.

Librarylu · 01/06/2012 08:58

How old is it too? All electronic goods can be fixed/replaced free of charge if less than 6 yrs old and the damage is not your fault. I also did this for my iPods. It took some arguing but its true. Martin Lewis says so.

Hulababy · 01/06/2012 09:01

Vodafone bought my 3GS from me for just under £100, so £165 seems a lot to me.

Why not speak to Apple about your own phone. A friend's phone died but Apple did a good deal with her to replace it.

niceguy2 · 01/06/2012 11:58

Oh and when you say your old phone has died, do you know what the problem is?

The 3GS's are actually pretty easy to fix. I just replaced a friend's screen for £25 which she broke by getting it wet. Also often if it won't turn on, you can hold both buttons down for 10 seconds to do a hard boot. If it's an older phone then it could be the battery which is also a doddle to replace.

Thanks - completely forgot I had posted on here! I dropped my phone and smashed the screen but before that the volume control wasnt working properly (the on/off sound button). Then, at the weekend it froze and I have tried holding down both buttons and have googled stuff telling me how to put it into recovery using Itunes but it just comes up with an error message saying it cant be recovered. I have been rummaging for my house insurance as I do have accidental damage for possessions and I did break it when it was charging and I accidentally kicked the lead which meant it smashed on the floor. Unfortunately my filing system means I cant find my house insurance .... this makes me sound far more of a disorganised careless wreck than I actually am. Grin.

Should have said that I'm not with a provider. Was with Orange but left when it was 2 years old and so now just have a SIM deal with GifGaf.

You could sell it to me Niceguy Smile

I think that's a lot there have been two more models since then and a new phone is expected to be announced this month. What do mazuma pay for them? I use that as a good starting point.

Nospringflower · 01/06/2012 17:08

I've never heard of mazuma Blush and cant look it up on my phone now!
