help needed tonight for novice wifi user!

I have a laptop at home which is wifi enabled (and used wirelessly at home) but I have never ventured out with it (or any other device).
Tomorrow i am going away and would like to take it with me but I'm not sure how to connect at a wifi hotspot or whatever they are called.
Also, part of the time I will be in France. Can I connect there? If so, how?

Ah well, too late, never mind.

I will head off disconnected from the world. First time it has ever bothered me!

Will update myself on technology when I return, didn't realise how far I was lagging behind
