HP printer won't use refilled cartridge

Recently got an HP c4580 and it needed new, black ink. Bought a refilled cartridge and it seemed to print fine with it initially, but now it is flat-out refusing to use it. If I take it out and just print with the original, HP colour cartridge, it works fine.

Is it possible that HP have done something sneaky so only their cartridges work properly, or am I being cynical?

Does it have a microchip on the front?

The cartridge? No, don't think so. What would that mean?

It's a chip that the printer recognises. If you have the old cartridge you can take the chip off at put it on the new one. Also set your printer to recognise that you have installed a new cartridge.

Oh. We don't have the old cartridge as inherited the printer without it. No idea how let my printer know there's a new cartridge, unless that's what aligning is? I've done that, several times. Thanks for your help!

It is no secret that HP do their very best to make sure that their printers only work with HP cartridges. It's for our benefit you know. (If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell.)

Most printer brands do the same. I suggest you buy a brand that doesn't. I'm not sure which brands they are. Maybe Canon and/or Brother.
