The password is often written on the back or bottom of the router (ie the box you plugged the phone cable into).

Otherwise you would have to ask the person that set the password!

Wifi only works when you are in range of a wifi network. So obviously if you don't have wifi at home that doesn't apply.
Out and about wifi is available but you usually have to enter a password.. (eg if there was 'free wifi' at a service station on the M40 you might have to ask for the password unless it was password free in which case it would just work.)
If your phone is finding wifi at home, and you don't have wifi then it is probably picking up neighbours networks.. which unless you are on very friendly terms and can ask to log on to theirs.. might as well just switch wifi off on your phone when home, to stop it constantly asking you!

When it brings up the list of available wifi networks if there is a padlock symbol next to it it is password protected. Hotels etc often have passwords you have to ask for. Macdonalds is freely available and wacky warehouse you have to register. Quite a lot of places in London you can connect easily for free.
