How do I scan those barcode things with android phone please?

I'm new to android technology and just wondered how you scan normal barcodes and also those ones you see on adverts with my HTC Desire S. Where do I find the right function thingy on the phone please? TIA.

You have to download a barcode reader app from the app store. These are usually free. I think the one I got is just called barcode scanner from ZXing team.

Then all you do is have the widget on one of your home screens so it's handy, touch it to open app and point phone at the barcode.
