I write web content...why do clients keep asking me to replicate the stock of other sites?

I have been asked twice now...to re-write almost the entire stock inventory of a website. One example was a gardening site, with various growing aids and now I have been asked to re-write the contents of a fancy dress store by another client.

Are my clients creating sites which ape the original and then simply take customers to the original site thus gaining money per-click? Or something else? Is this legal?

I had to do this too.

When you rewrite the stock info is it from spreadsheet info or literally lifted from another site?

We are allowed to use the info on manufacturers website for our own.
