Digital TV recorder - I think the Hard Disk has died - any ideas?

Please help if you can, I've Googled for known issues and not really found anything useful...

I can still receive television programmes through my 'set top box' (I'm definitely receiving them through this rather than the television to which it's attached) but I can't access recorded programmes or the 'timers' set up to record in the future - I get an error message 'HD initialisation has failed'

On reading the manual, I think I need to re-format the hard disk, however I can't get to the bit of the menu I need to in order to do this because I get the same error message.

I've unplugged it and switched back on a number of times without success
I've followed the 'first time installation and retune' option, which just seems to remove a couple of settings, ask you to select them again (i.e. aspect ratio, language) and then scan for channels. I realised this wasn't what I needed when it said that it would preserve my recordings, I will lose everything if I successfully re-format the hard disk won't I.

It's a Hitachi HDR255 if that helps anyone, it's just under a year old... so anyone have any ideas or suggestions, am about to send DH to look for the receipt/warranty details
