i-phone calendar - cannot get whole month display

phone's been messing around - i usually check calendar and make entries on the whole month display but there are times when it seems to default to a sort of daily display (looks a bit like a spreadsheet set up). I don't seem to being doing anything deliberate to get this view and at the moment I cannot get it back to whole month - any suggestions?

At the bottom of the calendar, you should be able to press the "Month" button.

If it's not there, try restarting the phone/app.

It's a weird thing - I just tried and nothing happened but then I turned my phone around - like from landscape to portrait and the month display has come up. Very strange. This is a replacement phone from apple (not sure if new or reconditioned) but I never had this problem with old phone.
