Updating Map on old Tomtom sat nav. Good idea / easy / does it just crash the damn thing?

My TomTom sat nav is 5yrs old now and I've never updated it. TBH it's only used for days out but it's worth it's weight in gold as it's just me and my young dc's. As a result we've got lost a couple of times and it gets in a tizz when we drive on the new A30 in Cornwall as it thinks I'm off roading Grin.

I've been on the Tomtom web site and can get a new map for the UK which should do for a few years. However I know 2 people whose sat navs broke when they downloaded new maps onto them. Hence a £30 map wasted and they had to buy new satnavs. I'm almost tempted to just buy a whole new one rather than risk wasting money on an update.

Can anyone reassure me it is worth it updating them or has anyone elses satnav died after an update?

TIA.

There's no reason that updating the map should break your tomtom. I would check first though that there is enough storage space for the new map as they have got a lot bigger over the last few years.

Personally I would save the £30 and put it towards a new tomtom from the outlet store. My last two tomtoms have been refurbs and they're just like new when you get them (in fact I suspect most of them are new and are cancelled orders/ old stock etc).

Tried to update my TomTom One the other week and it didn't want to know. If yours crashes there's a reset button on the bottom. Push it and let it charge for two hours and it should return to normal.

I have a Tom Tom which I update regularly with no problems at all. Tis very easy (and I am no techno-geek Grin )
HAving said that - it'll probably be a disaster next time I try to do it....

I know I am resurrecting a zombie, but mine has lost the map during the update.
