He's emailed off the form to O2 to get the code to unlock it and they are being rubbish about it. Are those websites safe to use or is there another way of doing it without O2? Thanks

You should chase O2.

Apple iphones can only be unlocked by Apple. What O2 do is send a request to Apple whom then send the unlock code. Actually thinking about it, have you plugged the phone into iTunes and synced the phone recently? That's how it gets unlocked. They may have done it already? I know Vodafone didnt tell me. I just tried it a couple of times and found it worked.

Depending on your version of Apple software and baseband on your phone, you can do whats called a Jailbreak unlock but its a real pain in the arse if I am honest. Because you basically have to stick with that version of IOS until the hackers find a new hack for any later versions or your phone becomes locked again.

Best to get O2 to do their stuff and get the official unlock. Helps with resale value too.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try then ring O2 again if not

Thanks, I tried the above and no good. Still not unlocked. O2 are being really difficult, I'm just being passed around. DH is on a business contract and his old number that the phone was assigned is no longer recognised, so it's hard to access customer 'service'. I'm getting really hacked off now. Would a jailbreak be a bad thing to do? I'm not that fussed about having all the latest stuff - I just want to use the iphone that is currently sitting in the drawer gathering dust. If I really like it/use it a lot I'll probably get a later version next year.

And how do I do a 'jailbreak' {in the dark ages emoticon}.....

Jailbreaking can be very easy or very difficult depending on which version of the operating system (IOS) the phone is installed with. To further complicate matters only certain basebands are unlockable using Ultrasn0w.

My suggestion is to either take it to a shop and ask them to jailbreak it for you and install Ultrasn0w (they should know what you mean) or take Babs suggestion and get a GiffGaff SIM card. Giffgaff are dirt cheap and use the O2 network meaning you shouldn't need to jailbreak/unlock at all.

If all else fails raise a complaint with O2 or email the CEO like I did with Vodafone back when they were spectacularly incompetent.

Thanks. I took out a 12 mth contract with orange in Jan as my current one had ended and I'd gone on to a v expensive tariff, with a view to getting the iphone up and running soon after. I had no idea what a pain it was going to be getting it unlocked. I actually did look at Giff gaff at the time and now wish I'd taken that option. DH going to give o2 another go. Like the idea of emailing CEO.... x
