How do I get fancy edges and effects on photographs?

I've seen a lot of photographs online recently where the edges are kind of broken up so they look antiquey, and maybe other effects to give the impression of age etc. I'd quite like to try some of these with my photos, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I have an old version of Photoshop - version 7 iirc. I don't recall seeing anything on there that quickly adds this sort of effect without spending hours on layers and manipulation, which I don't really have the time to do.

Does anybody know if there is a plugin available, or some software that I could use in conjunction with photoshop to get these effects? Ideally something I could download for free or cheaply. I don't really want to spend more than about a tenner, but it would be pretty cool to be able to do something interesting with my photos other than what Photoshop offers.

Thankyou Smile

Watching with interest! I enquired re photoshop recently and was told it is now v expensive? The software with my old camera did it but it was a rubbish programme otherwise

Photoshop has always been pretty expensive! I originally got mine bundled with a scanner, which strangely was much cheaper than buying it on its own Confused.

I was hoping that there might be a simple programme that could overlay edge effects with just a couple of clicks. But nobody seems to know - or maybe photoshop geeks are busy photoshopping stuff instead of mumsnetting!!

Did your camera come with specific software, sometimes they have basic editing stuff on them?

pixlr.com/o-matic/

try this

There's an iPhone app called Hipstomatic which does this and is amazing. It adds assorted filters/effects/film types as you take the photo. I think that's probably what you're seeing online.

iamm343 thankyou!!! Thanks That's exactly what I was looking for! I shall have lots of fun with that!!

Hassled the app sounds great, unfortunately my phone is nowhere near as clever as that!

That pixlr.com site is brilliant - thanks! This is what I love about mumsnet - I'm forever stumbling across fab things like this!
