.... so I have an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar tomorrow morning. Has anyone had this problem and was it easily repairable? Did it cost a fortune? iPhone is 16 months old so out of warranty period. Thanks!

I have the same problem. I just decided to google it and have fixed the problem. Ive set out the instructions- it looks complicated but its really simple: turn phone off and on again, this will bring up the home screen.

The go to settings, general, scroll down to passcode lock, turn it on, enter a simple passcode (it will ask you to enter this twice).

Then press the on/off button quickly (ie dont hold it down like when you need to turn the phone off) this puts the phone into sleep mode, press it again to turn the phone on. The press emergency call, then press the back arrow, then enter your passcode and WHOOPEE you are at the home screen.

After this you just need to use the on off button, emergency call, back arrow, passcode each time you want to get to the home screen.

Hope that helps....

Hmm - didn't work for me. I didn't get the emergency call option. Going to get my hubby to try when he gets back because I have a history of being completely useless and a technophobe. Thank you - and hopefully he'll have more success Grin.

There is a software solution to this somewhere in the settings menu. Mine isn't up for renewal for another few months and it has been struggling for some time!

Oh what a shame.

Just to clarify, on my phone, the emergency call button is at the bottom of the 'enter passcode' screen to the left of the zero.

I found the a video link on how to do this too .

Hope DH has more luck.......

Have you tried restoring it on itunes? I find it fixes most faults, speaker went on mine and restoring it worked.

I just looked at google and also saw that a few people have had "dirty buttons" and their home key just needs a good clean. I have now found that mine works if I just lightly press the top of the button so I'm hopeful that if Apple can just give it a clean, it'll work fully without a full repair jobby. That'll teach me to let the kids play Toca Boca Tea Party on it! I'll let you know what happens tomorrow!
