Help! How do I tick this box on word.doc application?

I'm trying to fill in a university application form for a job. Had to download a word doc file and I can't fill it in without destroying the layout . What do I have to change on my settings to fill it in on the computer? In parts I have to tick a box but I have no idea how to get my X or tick inside the box .

Just go one space after the box, delete box and replace with a cross. You won't get a cross in a box, but you will get a cross...
