I have just wasted an hour of my life speaking to a complete moron from Apple customer support so am pleading to you geeky MNers to help me!

I have an iPhone 3GS (on a personal contract). I have just got an iPhone 4S through work so am giving my 3GS to DH. He has his own iTunes account as he has an iPod and now also has his own iCloud account (?) as do I.

When I had the 3GS and he had the iPod we created 2 different users on his PC to avoid any iTunes problems. I now have put iTunes on my work laptop for my new phone.

My problems are:-

  • can I share my purchased apps with him?
  • on my laptop when I connected my phone for the first time the apps were greyed out and I couldn't click or drag them - what is wrong?
  • once my laptop is working can I use iTunes on both my laptop and the PC?

Would it be easier if we both shared my iTunes account? I know he'd have to sort his music out for a start. The idiot at apple just told me I couldn't because we would receive each others emails?!?

Please help!!!

Try this. You need to read the article to the end including the updates. It does work.

That was what the woman at the customer care was trying to do but she said my DH would lose all the apps he already had on his phone?

We're just discussing it now. We'll be getting an ipad2 soon and we are thinking it might just be best using one account for both of us so that when we get the iPad we can have them all on there without these problems. Any thoughts anyone?

Can share if you both use the same itunes account - can then share apps, have both calendars, etc.
Music - just sent up play lists and only sync your own play lists to each phone

Honeymoonmummy · 04/02/2012 10:34

Thanks Hula. And can we have our own email accounts, calendar etc?

Yes, you can.

You can set your own calendars and emails on your own iPhones/iPads.

I have two email accounts on my iPhone anyway, and use one of these on the iPad too, and DD has her own email on her iTouch - all use the same iTunes. We each have a calendar too.

We share apps in dropbox and each have our own iTunes accounts. You have to enter the other persons iTunes password when there is an update but otherwise not too much hassle (and I saved a fortune by sharing Tomtom so didn't have to buy DH a new satnav).

I have 4 email accounts / calendars on my iPhone, you can turn off the mail for an account in settings so you just view the calendar.

Honeymoonmummy · 07/02/2012 02:27

Ooh, what's Dropbox? [goes off to Google]

Sorry! Dropbox is an Internet file storage programme. You have an account with a storage limit and you can set up shared folders with other users. We save apps we want to share to a folder that DH, DD And I can all access. You can then save an app from there to the appropriate place on your computer and it will be added to iTunes. Does that make sense?
