How can I convert an avi file to an Mpeg?

Is it possible to do this so my DD can watch a film that we have on the laptop (an avi) on her portable DVD player via an SD card?

I use a piece of software called DVD Catalyst. The link is tools4movies.com. It is about $9 USD.

The family have a number of gadgets (Apple iPod, Blackberry, Archos) and this software does it all.
