PAC code problems

I'm probably being stupid here, but please could someone who has done this explain how it works.

I finally replaced my 8 year old PAYG phone with a wonderful smart phone. I want to keep my old number from a different network, so as instructed, I rang the old supplier and requested a PAC code.
I then rang the new supplier on my new phone and gave the code and my old number to them. The gave me a date for it to transfer.

The transfer has now happened, but all it has done is transfer the sim on my old phone to the new supplier, not changed the number on my new contract phone.

What have I done wrong?

How do you mean it's transferred the SIM? You didn't take the old card out and put it in the new phone, I assume? If you make a call from your new phone (say to your landline or someone else's mobile), what number comes up?

Yes, just replacing it in the new phone was my first thought, but it would still be PAYG not transferred to my new contract surely.

Off to work now.
Will look at any replies when I'm back later.

Right, so you've got two phones:

Phone A (your original one) with the original SIM inside
Phone B (your new one) with the new SIM inside

Now that the transfer has happened, Phone A is still working but instead of saying 'Orange' at the top of the screen it now says 'Vodafone'? If you dial your original phone number, Phone A rings and if you dial the new phone number, Phone B rings?

Hi Tribpot,

Thanks for replying.
Yes, you were correct with your assumptions but over the last couple of hours, it appears that my old number has been gradually transferred to the new phone.

At first when I called from it, it was using my old number but wouldn't receive calls to that number. Within the last half hour, it will now also receive calls to that number.

Looks like I was worrying unnecessarily and just needed a bit of patience.

Thanks anyway.
