I-phone - can't hear anything during phonecalls

I can hear if using my earphones or if call is on speaker; can also listen to music. So which part of the phone is not working?

Three things to try. Turn off and turn on again. Then mqke sure the isn't anything stuck down the hole where the headphone jack goes- sometimes there's a bit of dust or something that makes the phone think there's headphones plugged in even if there aren't. Then try resoring the phone.

That's the limit of my technical knowledge! Hope one of those helps

Ok - I've tried turning on and off and restoring but still not working. Am going to try hoovering the hole!

Which version of iPhone is it?

Try defluffing the ear thingy first but if that doesn't work then it sounds like you need the earpiece speaker replacing.

honisoit · 10/01/2012 22:12

You haven't got the plastic coating on it, have you?

iphone 4

I do have a protective film on the screen and one of those silicone protective cases - do these make a difference?

Can you try it without the film and case and see if it works?

I've recently had a problem with my iphone 4 but have found Orange to be sort of helpful. I don't have their insurance but they were very happy to exchange my phone. Only problem is that the reconditioned replacements have had other faults. (I'm currently on replacement 3 and keeping fingers crossed that this one doesn't have any issues)

Even without insurance maybe your provider will be able to help if its a fault with the phone (is how I understood it - insurance covers me being an idiot or theft, but an actual fault on the phone they will resolve)

The film should have hole cut out where the ear piece is and the silicone case won't be anywhere near this part unless you have it on back to front. which would mean you can't access the screen either so I think you would have noticed that :o

I think you need to take it into a shop appropriate to where you bought it/your service provider.

maggiethecat · 11/01/2012 13:30

Provider say they will sort but I will end up being phoneless for some time.

Soup, do you know where the earpiece speaker is? Is it on the screen below (but centred) the on/offbutton?

It's the long thin bit with a grill in it at the top of the phone [technical] so yes, where you said.
