very stupid question about portable tvs

Have a teenager coming to stay for a few months, plus two younger children. It would be really handy to have another tv that could move between rooms, as I'm sure teenager won't always want to be watching the same as me or the children (tv in communal bit), and at times it would be good if the children could watch in their rooms, but I don't want permanent tvs in their rooms that I'd have to police, as they're still a bit young.

Problems is, none of the other rooms have aerial points. Is there such a thing as a portable tv that doesn't need to be plugged into an aerial socket? (luddite alert - haven't used a portable since student days when I had a round bendy wire thing, one up from a coat hanger).

Teenager will have a laptop so presumably iplayer etc. do-able, but not regular tv.

Thanks amichrissima! I'm not sure if we still get analogue but that's given me some ideas.

Have you got wifi? If so, let your visiting teen stream iplayer, or get a TV with a little room antenna, but if you're in a poor reception area (far away from a transmitter) the signal won't be consistently good enough to view.

Check using this website [http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=TL204494]] - put your postcode in the box, it will give you details of your local transmitter and information on how good the signal would be for you.

If you buy a brand new portable TV it will be digital (unless you buy an old one off ebay), which will be better quality signal.

But if your visitor has a laptop or smart phone, accessing TV over that might be simpler.

HTH.
