HTC Wildfire, how do I unlock it?

Dd1 got an HTC Wildfire for Christmas today and within about an hour of getting it had managed to lock it and now we can't get it unlocked.

She went to settings and had to set a pattern on some dots on the screen, but when she puts in the sequence she says she made it just keeps saying to try again.

Does anyone know of any way we can reset the pattern? We've tried taking the battery out and switching it on again, sometimes it gives an option to reset the phone which we've tried but it doesn't let us back into the phone it just keeps asking for the pattern.

Can anyone help? Or am I going to have to take it back to the shop tomorrow to see if they can sort it out.

HTC wildfire manual here,on page 171 there is a section on what to do if you have forgot the screen lock pattern,however if you were doing a full factory reset,it should restore the phone to how it was when it came out of the box.

Thanks for your help, I tried the restore to factory settings myself and it didn't work. Today I took it to the shop where I bought it and they said they couldn't do anything and to phone the technical helpline. The guy on the phone also couldn't do anything and told me to phone HTC who will arrange for a courier to come and collect it and take it back to the factory to reset it, they are closed until Wednesday, so I guess Dd1 won't get to use her Christmas persent until sometime in January.
