there must be some way to reset it to 'factory' settings so that we can then make it say timetosmilejunior instead? And to erase the bought songs which are on it?

I am not geeky in the slightest, so the first thing I would do, would be to Google the model and find a manual for it!

Plug it into iTunes and do a factory restore. It'll wipe everything including the name.

If you're near an Apple store, take it in and ask them for advice. I find their sales assistants very obliging

As GwenMLwB said! Plug into itunes..it will discover it and tell you it has been synched with another computer and do you want to wipe it to factor settings? (yes you do) It then takes ages and does just that and you will be able to rename it.

I have bought several second hand ipods and so renamed quite a few!
