We are getting rid of Sky. I was going to get BT vision instead but keep hearing that it is utterly shite, so new plan is just to get a box to record stuff onto. We have a decent telly with built in freeview.

Please tell me a bit about which boxes are good - would like one that can record lots Xmas Grin Or if BT vision is actually great, tell me about that, I am flexible!

We have a fairly basic (and cheap!) Humax and love it. It's our second one, last one lasted for 4 years but then the hard drive blew up. We record quite a lot and never got close to running out of space. There are probably better ones out there that have more features but I'm very happy with ours. It's pretty reliable too. We can record two channels at once (and watch a third, I think, but it's never come up).

Thanks Alma - anyone else any experiences?

We've had a humax for years. It's excellent but consigned to family room now as we now have BT vision. I like BT vision. Watch a lot of the "on demand" stuff - both free and pay-to-view. We have full package with Sky Sports as well as broadband and unlimited phone. Pay around £75/month for all of that. No idea how that compares to other phone/broadband/telly packages.

I've heard very good things about Humax. Also the Tivo boxes that Virgin supply are supposed to be good, too.

At the moment we have everything except movies with Sky and its over £90 a month, far too much. Have phone and broadband and line rental in there. Had hoped it would be less than £75 for BT vision on an all-in package

It would be less without Sky Sports - think that adds £10-15.

My Humax didn't last very long and dropped dead, I have a Hitachi one now.

Do you currently have Sky+?
If so can't you just stop the contract and use your box for the free sky programmes?

No cost, job done.

We've had one of the earliest Humax PVRs - for about 8 years now. It's still going strong. I wish it would blow-up so I'd have to get a new one that can record more than one channel at a time.
