I thought asking for a cheap little (say 7") tablet to browse the internet and read things on might be a good idea but now I have discovered I have no idea how to choose one...DH is worried about the wifi connectivity - does it need to be b/g/n or is b/g ok? and is there anything else I should know? anyone recommend a brand?

I wouldn't worry too much about wifi. The main question is what is your budget?

In general, always go for a capacitive screen, never resistive. At 7", this is more likely than if you go for the larger 10".

That said, if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting the 10". In my opinion, it's a much more usable size.

Thanks.
I was thinking really small and cheap, take it away with us sort of thing.
I have seen some for < 100 pounds - are they usable?

In my opinion, no. At that price, they will almost certainly be resistive screens, low spec hardware and probably no access to Android market place. I'd suggest you save the £100 and wait until you have a bit more then buy a decent one.

The old adage, 'Buy Cheap, Buy Twice' is especially true with the tablet market.
