I need advice too, I am hoping to spend upto £150 any advice ? I keep walking into the shops and am overwelmed by the range.

purple15 · 04/12/2011 19:31

just checked the price of the Sony and it is cheaper than I expected to spend. Is there any differance between the £70 and £150 ?

I would go for the Panasonic personally. I carry one about with me everywhere and even though its not as good a my SLR it takes beautiful photos.

The main difference between the Lumix FS16 & the Sony Cybershot w510 is the fact the Panasonic has the ability to take videos in HD. The Sony does not.

There's a fair price difference on the Jessops website but much less if you get it from Amazon.

It really depends what you want to use it for. If it's just for family snaps then both will be perfectly adequate. So stuff like days out, holiday's etc, they will be fine. But I wouldn't expect them to be much good in dark situations (night times, pubs etc.) nor indoors at school events etc.

there is an offer starting on thursday from lidl. its £99 for an olympus. Can someone take a look and let me know if its a good deal.. I am struggling with looking because the kids are about and its a surprice. My boy is 14 and into all his gadgets, he intially wanted an sli dont even know what it is, I think they starrt at £400. I just want something he will be impreessed with.

niceguy2 · 04/12/2011 23:47

Certainly for the price it looks good value. Olympus are a good camera make.

However, if your son wants a DSLR then this will not be 'impressive'. It's like asking for a Ferrari and getting a Fiesta.

That said, would you buy a 14yr old a Ferrari???

You may want to check out the Fuji S2970 from Jessops. £130 but it's a bridge camera which is more like a SLR in terms of features and still in your budget. And more likely to be 'impressive'.

I know a couple of ppl with that camera and it's great for the money. But again, it's no SLR. But then it's not £600 either!

purple15 · 05/12/2011 08:07

thanks for that, I like a bargain, so I am thinking the olympsus form lidl will be a lot of camera for the £99, now you have told me about the Fuji S2970 not sure what to do now.

niceguy2 · 05/12/2011 09:24

To be honest the Olympus is good value but I wouldn't say it's a 'bargain'. You can buy the exact same camera from Jessop's for £110. Well it's the VR320 but other than a 2GB SD card, I can't see any difference. So I'd say you are saving around £20.

Also, if I may be so bold. If your son has asked for a DSLR then I assume he's wanting to take more than just family snapshots. The Olympus is a family snapshot sort of camera. The Fuji is a hybrid between a DSLR and a small camera. Buying him the Olympus would ensure YOU get the bargain but your son won't get the camera he's wanting.

Lastly.....and I hope you read this today. Jessop's have dropped the price of the Fuji to £99.99 as their deal of the day. Link

At that price it's a real no brainer as to which one to get. A respectable family snap snap or a prosumer bridge camera for the same price.

right I will go with your advice and order the fuji from jessops today, hope you know what you are talking about , I really appreciate your help. ps. are you on commison from jessops? thanks again.

purple15 · 05/12/2011 14:45

Hi niceguy, just placed my order with jessops, thanks for that. It will be delivered tomorrow.

niceguy2 · 05/12/2011 15:02

Ha ha, I'm not a professional photographer and I don't work for Jessop's but I do know a fair bit about cameras.

If you are still in doubt, Jessop's sell both the Olympus VR320 and ofc the Fuji. Order the Fuji from their website today to be collected from the store. Then go and have a play with both before you decide.

Tell the salesperson your son wanted a DSLR and let them show you what the differences are.

Plus you have 30 days to take it back if you change your mind.

Hope that helps
