Have you already got either an Android phone or an iPhone? Do you have an Apple laptop or desktop? Want do you want to use it for?

(By the way, I think your question mark key is sticking. You might want to get that seen to.)

bignips · 15/11/2011 17:24

No had blackberry which i hate and have a galaxy tab which i love and a ipad which i love. Both are great but for totally diff reasons.

question mark may be sticking due to excitement concerning the question. it is just too big an issue for me to deal with and keep my mouth closed.

I have the iTouch and choose a Samsung Galaxy S2 and love it.

smileitssunny · 15/11/2011 18:49

I like my S2 but haven't played with iphone...

bignips · 15/11/2011 20:17

thank you,

Munch - do you have a mac also?

OP posts:
bignips · 15/11/2011 20:18

I have a mac and need my phone to connect to it. the galaxy tab is pants at connecting to a mac but i have heard that the galaxy s2 is ok and connects fine. anyone got experience of this?

OP posts:
bignips · 15/11/2011 20:19

does the s2 have swipe on it?

OP posts:
hayleysd · 15/11/2011 20:22

I have an iPhone 4 and love it couldn't go back to another phone, 4s looks good but my upgrades due next year so hopefully there will be a 5 out then or soon after.

SecretNutellaFix · 15/11/2011 20:25

S2 has swype.

bignips · 15/11/2011 20:29

ooooh i love swype so much. it is ingenious. Can't believe that apple don't have it tbh.

waiting for a iphone five is tempting but my phone is awful and needs to be replaced.

OP posts:
niceguy2 · 15/11/2011 22:09

The screen on the S2 is much larger than the iPhone which makes typing easier if you have long nails (so my GF tells me)

The S2 also has Gorilla Glass which makes it more resistant to scratches.

The S2 is cheaper.

The S2 is Android so has widgets.

So which would I choose?

The iphone of course.

bignips · 15/11/2011 22:28

no no no Niceguy, why?

I love apple, have all apple products and love my ipad and imac but the galaxy is so sexy.

Well bignips you have answered your own question there. Stick with one platform. Otherwise it will piss you off. I have a totally wifi/windows type home set up. I also have an iPad and the original samsung galaxy and the compulsory iPod. I would ditch the apple kit in a second if the samsung peeps had a matching offering. For me dealing with Apple is like de-skilling and going back to the late 90s. But that is just a compatibility issue. The Galaxy works with everything. Apple does not. But If all your kit is Apple...stick with it! If I already had Apple everything I would totally stick with it.

bignips · 15/11/2011 22:57

thanks Strumpy. too true but on the other hand apple and samsung have been trying to work together on the s2 so was wondering about other peoples views on this tbh. i think you are right though. the camera on the galaxy tab is amazing though not sure it can be beaten. and swype is lush.

OP posts:
Strumpypumpy · 15/11/2011 23:05

Swypse'sok. Camera is sooo good on the Galaxy phone I don't even bother taking our home camera out. But tbh. Wait. Surely at some point Apple will wise up? No Flash ability is very annoying. But.....I think you have to fall into a camp really. Choose one or the other. They don't mix. But Galaxy etc is more forgiving than Apple. apple bug me because I use iPad for the net, but can't look at loads of websites because of flash, then my iPod is just for running....my phone does everything....buy actually it's a bit too bulky to wear for a run and the battery isn't great. But I am now a firm believer in sticking to one make. It's smoother.

MunchingNoPickles · 15/11/2011 23:10

Bignips DH has imac i have laptop and ipad2.

The camera is very good on S2. widget apps are good.

bignips · 15/11/2011 23:20

is the battery good on a s2, i agree with you strumpy about sticking to one and i have really believed that u till i got my galaxy tab out again and remembered how much i love it.

I've not seen any interest from Apple whatsoever in assisting its customers with transferring music from iTunes to anything other than iPods and iPhones. And particularly not to Android. Apple very much wants to lock you into its own ecosystem of hardware, software and services.

I've got a Galaxy S2 and it's fantastic. Slim, powerful, with a great screen and lots of flexibility in what I can do with it. But if I had a mainly Mac household then I'd get an iPhone and live with the limitations because to do anything else is going to be an exercise in frustration.

niceguy2 · 16/11/2011 09:27

I actually think that looks is where the S2 lets itself down. Yes it's got an OLED screen but other than that, it's a bit too light, doesn't feel like it'd survive a few bumps and a little too plastic fantastic for my liking.

I think the UI is a bit mickey mouse when compared to Sense UI on the Sensation.

But the reason I'd go for the iphone over the S2 is quite simply because with Apple you get the whole shebang. Yes yes, I know ppl will go ah yes but no flash....and i don't like iTunes blah blah. Yet for 99% of people it's not a big deal.

It's a great looking phone, everything about it oozes quality. The app market is mature. The apps are also way more polished than some of the absolute rubbish on the Android market.

Being the most popular phone out you can get screen protectors, cases, accessories practically anywhere. Even in Tesco's! The range is unbelievable. Buy a new car and chances are it will have ipod connectivity. Sync it with bluetooth and it will drag across your phonebook. Get a new stereo and it'll probably have an ipod dock.

In short, it...just....works. Leaving you more time to do practical stuff rather than fiddle with it for fiddling's sake.

Lastly Apple customer service is without a doubt the best around. If there are problems, take it into their store (doesn't matter where you bought it) and they'll sort it out there & then for you.

Don't get me wrong, the S2 is undoubtedly a great phone. But in my experience if you are getting a two year contract, you want the best you can afford and having the best hardware is only part of the equation. Remember, 2 years is quite a hell of a commitment. I've had plenty of girlfriends didn't last that long! Grin

smileitssunny · 16/11/2011 18:48

s2 battery - depends what you use it for. Mine can last 2 days (which I'm led to believe is pretty good for a smartphone) but then I mainly use it for phone calls (!) texts, email and MN Blush. Oh and the awesome camera. V clever how you can take a pic and have it instantly on fb/gmail/dropbox/wherever - though I'm sure iphone can do the same.
microusb cable to charge - should be fairly universal regardless of your other hardward, I would think. I'm no expert though.
Good luck and enjoy being able to make the decision!

bignips · 17/11/2011 11:43

Niceguy: i think you have pretty much somed it up. Gotta go and do school run but i am def coming back to reply. Cheers smile. I love dropbox and also evernote but yes you are right you can do that easily on the iphone.

Facetime is good also. I live in the bvi and i use skype and facetime to speak to my parents all the time and with an iphone i could do this at the supermarket. The time differrence gets frustrating so it would make communication so much better.

:o at Snorbs

bignips · 17/11/2011 13:19

I love mac and a total mac geek. The sumsung has moved me a little and totally temped me but i think you are all right stick with what you know otherwise it will get confusing. And snorbs you are right apple do not work with other well, they don't want to and don't tend to make it easy.

cheers all, off for a Brew

I have an S2 and dp has an iphone4.
I would go for the S2 everyday, and personally think it looks way way nicer than the iphone.
The screen in particular is far superior.
And the build quality on mine seems fab (I dropped it very hard onto carpark tarmac 2 days after I got it, and it just bounced - v small dent on the case, that was it)
