have just had a birthday and used gift money to boost my ipad kitty... so now I just need to work out which one and be sure I am right in thinking its the answer to my needs...
I have an iphone and love it.
Been coveting an ipad for ages - but am pretty clueless with all technology!
Questions for anyone with the patience!
I dont have my own laptop and hope using an Ipad would mean I could stop sharing my DH itunes account - and set my own up on ipad - can I do this?
16 or 32 gb - 16 doesnt sound much I want to store photos on it and music files as above.
Also keen to use as ereader (though know its limitations on this front from all the kindle fans)
Not bothered about movies really - I guess maybe occasionally for travel.
Dont think I need 3g as can use home wireless and 'tether' to iphone (though no clue how to do this yet!)
Oh and anyone know if there is a new one due out soon - as would consider waiting if so.
All input gratefully received!

Yes, you can set up your own iTunes account

Get the biggest capacity you can afford. 16GB isn't very much especially when talking photos and music.

I use mine with the Kindle app and it's fine. Not quite as good as a Kindle but pretty bloomin' good.

I have 3G but I use it out and about a lot. No need for 3G if you would use it mostly at home.

I'm not aware of any iPad updates due before the spring so I wouldn't bother waiting. Besides, there'll always be an update round the corner, you can't wait for them all! :o

You'll love it!

I have the 16gb one and it's got loads of space free but I don't have many movies on there. One movie took up loads of space though.

I thought the new iCloud thingy means you can store photos and stuff externally so you'd need fewer GB on ipads and other Apple devices?

I do use 3g occasionally and think it was worth it to have that option. I've got a Three pay monthly card which is quite cheap. It came in handy the other day when I was stuck in traffic on the M25. Handed the ipad to DS and he googled the traffic report and read it to me so I knew what was going on and what to expect!

Agree about the 3rd gen IPad - it's not due before the Spring.

"I thought the new iCloud thingy means you can store photos and stuff externally so you'd need fewer GB on ipads and other Apple devices? "

No, that's not what iCloud is for. With iCloud you still need to store the music or videos on your iOS device. So you still need space and when it runs low you'll still be doing the "if I delete this I can fit that on" dance. The difference is that you can download stuff you've bought onto the iPad whenever you're on the internet and not just when you're wired into your computer. So it makes the "lack of space" dance mobile, but you've still got the dance.

As for photos in particular, iCloud will only host up to 1000 photos and then only for 30 days. So right now it's not a genuine photo storage solution. You still need to get the photos off of the iOS device and somewhere "permanent".

I went for the 64gb due mainly to a lucky find of some unused tesco vouchers that boosted my 'kitty' but I agree with Gwendoline, get the biggest you can afford. Also, check whether your mobile provider let's you use the tethering function on your iPhone, I'm with Tesco and can't do it, which is a bit of a pest. However, I went with the wifi only, because I will use my phone when out and about, and I will change mobile provider to one that allows tethering if I need to in the longer term. At the moment, my precious iPad has not even been out the house!

I absolutely love it, best purchase since, oooh, my iPhone!
