Norton subscription has run out... alternatives?

My DD1 is away at Uni and her years Norton has run out..and they want £60 to renew online, which neither of us has to spare at the mo:(

Is there anything free (she is running windows 7) that would do the job, and if so does she need to uninstall Norton first? I'm a mac user so a bit hopeless with antivirus stuff!

Any help gratefully received!

AVG and Zonealarm

both have free versions and update regularly :)

AVG are great

Windows Security essentials is quite good too.
Don't forget Malawarebytes anti malware.

Even if you decide to stick with Norton it's worth checking in PC World etc. before renewing online. I picked up a new disc for less than half the price it would have cost to renew. Weird.

AVG free version. We've found it much better than Nortons

I caught a nasty while using AVG free. Techy friends tell me it's not as good as it used to be. I've been using Avira and Outpost (firewall) for a year or so with no problems. Both are free.

Another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free and unobtrusive.

avast and spybot search and destroy. kept my system clean for years.

I have used all the free ones and Microsoft Security Essentials comes out the best for me,it has a good detection rate and is now highly rated by the geeks apparently. As niceguy2 said its unobtrusive, and not so bloated and resource hogging as AVG.
