Do I need a laptop or netbook?

We already have a macbook at home which works fine. My only problem is that DP tends to hog it and, to be fair, often has work to do on it in the evenings. Sometimes I also need to work on it (mainly just Word and Excel and internet) and I also sometimes need a small laptop for when I'm travelling for work.

I was thinking of getting a netbook. Something like this. Am I crazy? Is 10" too small? Should I really fork out the extra for a proper laptop?

I don't really know what the difference between a laptop and a netbook is other than a netbook is smaller.

Can anyone help me?

I bought a netbook 3 years ago, basically for travelling. I found it to be quite slow in itself, and on the 3G dongle. There is no built in DVD drive, but you can get a separate one.

My DS has a very lightweight ACER laptop. It doesn't have a DVD drive, but is otherwise high-spec. It is very lightweight and has a 6 hour battery life.

I basically use my iPAD for everything now.

we have both netbook and laptop. The netbook is great for holidays, when it stores photos as well as doing e-mail/facebook. It is slow and doesn't have a decent word processing package, putting one on there might make it slower still. It won't play dvds, although you can get a separate drive, I think.

Laptops are less portable but you can do more with them.

I don't know anything about ipads [hsad]

Thanks. Sounds like a netbook wouldn't be much good for doing stuff on Word then. Probably better to fork out the extra and get a laptop. Thanks

I have a netbook.

I mainly use it for internetting and storing pics/videos. I've got an external DVD drive but tbh I've not used it yet.
I use ms Word, Excel and Power Point on my netbook and its not slow at all.

I love it.

I have an Acer netbook (two or three years old now) and don't find it at all slow for using word, excel etc, though I don't use it for that all the time. And it has been very useful for travelling, though mainly it gets used by me for internet access at home when the DCs are hogging the main computer.

Just checked your link and saw it's an Acer Aspire - mine's an earlier model of the same series.

I use open office on my Samsung netbook. it gives 8 hours battery and is fine for browsing, emails, letters etc

I have a 2-3 yr old one which is a Samsung N110

jamandposterpaint · 28/10/2011 14:30

It's a Samsung NC10 Rosa.

RamblingRosa · 29/10/2011 22:43

Thanks. I've just been looking at the Samsung NC10 and a few others online. Still really undecided. But then I looked at proper (15"+) laptops and was amazed at how much they cost. I've never bought one before. Always had work ones or hand me downs. The cost of a proper laptop makes me think a netbook is more up my street.
