Tivo -- possible to transfer files?

Am considering getting Tivo, but DH says that the only reason to get it, as opposed to using Virgin catch up TV, is the possibility of transferring files, say to an external hard drive.

So far haven't been able to find out if it's possible...

It is possible - we use it all the time. You need to purchase TiVo Desktop Plus - it's about $25. We then move them to iTunes, and watch them on the laptop, or the iPod.
