that are cropping up on everything. Like barcode sort of things

What do you do with them? How do I make my phone scan them? Is there an app?

My android phone has an App called NeoReader pre-installed which scans them.

They're called QR Codes. They usually contain a link to a website (although they can be used for other things too).

Whether there is an app for your phone depends on your phone. If you have an Android phone then Google Goggles will do the job, although there are others. You fire up Goggles, point the camera at the QR code, it decodes it and then asks if you want to go to the website. I am sure there are similar apps for iPhone and Blackberry and maybe some others as well.

And when you've done all that, try generating some of your own!
zxing.appspot.com/generator/ is one site that does it, there are plenty of others.
