iPhone software update disaster

Dp tried updating his iPhone to new software . 4 point something . But it has wiped all photos etc and I think he might cry ... Any suggestions? When you go to it in iTunes and click on the restore it's a much earlier version of his phone

Strange. It usually does a backup whenever you plug the phone in. Did he turn it off?

When he goes into preferences and looks in Devices. Is the device backup date for his iphone a much earlier date?

Yes, it's an older one. Don't know why it didn't prompt a back up when doing the software update ( or suspect he might have forgotten ...)
