iPhone - what do you do for Wifi out and about?

I'm getting my iPhone on Tuesday Grin
What I want to know is.... I can use my home wifi when I'm at home, I also am signed up with The Cloud, but there's not many places that have that, and o2 wireless (my network) isn't really available in many places yet (although apparently they'll have a large network by 2013).

I notice BT Openzone has a large network, I'll be able to wifi pretty much anywhere, but costs £5 a month.

So what do others do about wifi when out and about?

I just use 3G. It is very rare to find a free wifi. I'm with O2 too and have never found anywhere (in London). I can highly recommend the free wifi at Geneva airport though!

RedBlanket · 28/08/2011 12:09

I use 3G most of the time when out and about or look for cafes with free wifi. Mcdonalds is usually the most reliable! I use it or browsing Internet, reading news and checking emails and I haven't been anywhere near my data limit.
BT Openzone has good coverage but I wouldn't use it enough to pay for it.

Glitterknickaz · 28/08/2011 12:10

This is it. I'm trying to work out whether it's cheaper to sub with openzone or get extra data in my package....

Mollie - every McDs I've ever been into has free wifi.

MollieO · 28/08/2011 12:19

That explains it. I haven't been in to a McDs for over 25 years! Grin

You really need a tariff which includes data. Otherwise you will be missing out on one of the best things about smartphones. Internet access whilst out & about.

MollieO · 28/08/2011 12:31

Most tariffs these days have a limit. My current 02 one doesn't but all the ones I've looked at recently do.

StringOrNothing · 28/08/2011 12:32

I use 3G, or mooch off friends I'm visiting, or use cafes. I never have a problem in London, even the District Line has a passable intermittent 3G signal.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 28/08/2011 12:32

What's your BB provider at home? BT gives you free Openzone and Fon for example.

Glitterknickaz · 28/08/2011 14:25

I'm with o2 for both mobile and home broadband.... but o2 wifi is in its infancy currently.

Mind you a 500MB limit isn't horrendously low is it?

OP posts:
MollieO · 28/08/2011 14:49

500MB? that's very low. I get through about 12GB a month at home. No idea how much on mobile broadband as its unlimited.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 28/08/2011 17:11

500 is normal now for mobile contracts. I get through about 1gb but some of that is work stuff.

Glitterknickaz · 28/08/2011 17:50

No, the 500GB is for iphone 3G use. I'm unlimited at home.

most contracts will now give you 500 but if you go over that - as i do, then you still can use the internet on 3g but it is so much slower and emails dont seem to download if no wifi - which is very annoying
