I want a fancy one that will allow me facebk and google+ access, etc etc
What's the best? Relative advs or disadvs?

niceguy2 - does the Sensation have actual buttons on the bottom, or are they part of the touch screen? I can upgrade mine in a couple of months, so starting to have a nose about :)

RamblingRosa · 28/07/2011 14:13

Well I ended up ignoring all the sage advice and being convinced by a very charming Orange salesman to plump for the Nokia N8 instead. DP reckons I've been had. I think it looks good though. 12megapixel camera. Not really sure about the whole Ovi app thing but since I'm currently on an un-smart, app-free phone I'm hoping it will still be an improvement on what I've got.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/07/2011 14:18

erk, sorry I agree with your DH (unless it was a bargain)

Grin
niceguy2 · 28/07/2011 14:25

Erm...even Nokia are ditching Nokia! I agree with your DP! Is it too late to change your mind? Honestly I wouldn't touch Nokia no matter what price since they are ditching their entire platform and moving to Windows phone.

Jareth. Yes it does have buttons but they are the touch ones and not physical ones which move (if that makes sense). Personally I don't like it and prefer the iphone's 1 button but then each to their own I guess.

Snorbs · 28/07/2011 14:39

The Nokia N8 actually looks a pretty good phone in its own right. It's well built and it's supposed to have a truly excellent camera.

The big problem with it is that Symbian software it runs has pretty much come to the end of its life. Nokia has announced that it's going to move to using Windows Mobile 7 for its future phones. Even before that announcement not many companies were producing apps for Symbian as all the real work was going on for iPhone and Android. Since Nokia has said that they'll not be producing any new Symbian phones then no developers see the point in developing Symbian apps.

If you're happy with the N8 as it stands right now then fair enough. But don't expect to be able to get any new apps on it. What's in the Ovi store today is likely to be pretty much it.

RamblingRosa · 28/07/2011 15:05

Oh no. I hate it when DP's right Grin.

Good news is it's not too late. I've got two weeks' grace to decide if I like it and send it back.

Why does everyone hate Nokia? I've always had Nokia phones and I really like them.

It was free but that's not the main reason I got it. I could have got the HTC Desire S or the Samsung Galaxy SII for just an extra £5 a month. I just got excited about the amazing camera on the Nokia.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/07/2011 15:12

Nokia used to be fantastic but they never kept up with industry changes (IMO) and fell behind, now they're shit and have a miniscule market share to what they once had (which was around 80% IIRC)

niceguy2 · 28/07/2011 15:30

Great camera...crap phone.

It's not about hating Nokia but just the fact that they're changing strategy themselves. So you'd be tying yourself to a two year contract to a phone which even the manufacturer are junking in less than a year.

And if the choice was between the N8 and the Galaxy S2 for £5 more, I'd have chewed your arm off for the S2. It's like someone saying you can have last season's Primark handbag but for a fiver a month more you can have the newest Louis Vuitton one instead. And you chose the Primark one because it was slightly bigger.

badmove · 29/07/2011 07:37

apparently we should all wait until Autumn to buy as a new iphone is coming on the market and the last one will therefore be cheaper

Really useful thread for me to hijack I got an iPhone 3 last week and had lots of problems with it. Was going to get a replacement but may just send it back and get an android.

Shame as it seemed like a bargain at £18.50 a month

niceguy2 · 29/07/2011 09:18

Strange Uninspired. What problems did you have? The 3GS is probably one of the best phones they ever released (for its time). Very few problems at all.

uninspired · 29/07/2011 16:30

That's interesting niceguy2 I may need to have a rethink about getting something different.

About 6 minutes into a call the call goes dead the apple logo appears and then it switches off and back on again. I've done the switch off with both buttons and reloaded the latest update from itunes but it still does it - had an online chat with an o2 guru who said it could be a firmware fault so it's going back to be replaced with either another or something else - hence me lurking on here to find an alternative sharpish Grin

chopstheduck · 29/07/2011 16:34

DH has the desire and doesn't like it very much. It doesnt allow apps to be installed to the memory card, so it gets full very quickly. The battery life is poor - lasts one day. It can be temperamental in general really.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy which is also android based. I did have to jail break it and put new software on it to improve the processing speed, but now it is pretty much perfect! Battery life isn't great, but then that's down to the very large screen and getting around 400 emails a day.

I am thinking about an iphone though. Mainly because of cloud and for better music access without having to carry an ipod too.

chopstheduck · 29/07/2011 16:36

Apparently the 5g iphone is going to be end of november, so the 4 will drop in price by then. The 4 is a lot better than the 3, not sure I would want to get the 3G,

Snorbs · 29/07/2011 16:46

As an aside, I've just been having a poke around for a new mobile for myself. T-Mobile is doing the Galaxy S2 on a two-year contract for £200 down then £20.42 a month.

For that you get 300min talk, 300 texts, plus the choice of one free "booster", such as the Internet booster which gives unlimited web browsing (albeit with a 500MB limit for streaming and file downloads). Details here.

I think I'm going to go and buy a new toy tomorrow Grin

didldidi · 29/07/2011 16:48

apologies for the hijack but uninspired where did you get your 3gs iphone deal from?

niceguy2 · 29/07/2011 17:48

@Uninspired

Sounds to me like you've got a faulty handset. It's deffo not a firmware fault. Whoever told you that is a muppet.

What I would do before you swap it for another device is make an appointment with your nearest Apple store. They'll probably swap it out for you if they can find a fault. Apple customer service is amongst the best there is so honestly I'd stick with them if you can.

niceguy2 · 29/07/2011 17:56

@Snorbs

I would check this deal out: Mobiles.co.uk

You'd get the S2 for £120 up front, £30 a month but crucially you are only tied for 12 months. This means you are only paying £480 over the lifetime of your contract rather than £690 over two years.

uninspired · 29/07/2011 22:10

niceguy - thanks for that advice, I will take a trip down there on Sunday.

uninspired · 29/07/2011 22:12

didl - O2 - you can probably get more mins / texts / data (it defaults to a 500MB internet for £21.50, but 100mb is the £18.50 deal) but that is more than enough for me as I mainly use wifi

ChasingSquirrels · 29/07/2011 22:17

Snorbs - I got the S2 on that deal a couple of months ago, through Quidco so £80 cash back.
I get the 300 minutes, 300 texts and unlimited internet plus a free booster (I have unlimited landline calls but you can change it monthly).

niceguy2 · 29/07/2011 22:21

If you are going down at the weekend then I strongly advise you to book an appointment at the Genius bar before you venture in. Usually the place is packed.

You can do this by going to the Apple website, selecting the store and then clicking on reserve at the genius bar icon.

follyfoot · 29/07/2011 22:29

Ive just got a Galaxy S2. It is truly a thing of beauty Grin. Was going to get the Sensation, but even the lady at Vodafone told me there is an issue with signal strength and lack of battery power with the Sensation.

Some comparisons http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/htc-sensation-vs-samsung-galaxy-s2-961874 and http://samsunggalaxys2review.org/samsung-galaxy-s2-vs-htc-sensation

Snorbs · 29/07/2011 22:38

niceguy, wow that's quite a deal. Thanks for that!
