Laptop running at 100% CPU

I have realized that my laptop keeps running at 100% CPU. Sometimes it stays there other times it goes down.

I have no virus or spyware as I virus check every 2-3 days.

I am using:
Compaq Pressario CQ61
Windows 7 Home Premium - service pack 1.

What's Task Manager say? Presumably you've seen 100% CPU from task manager? If you click on the processes tab and sort by CPU usage, what's sitting on 100%?

Is it flatlining at 100% or just going up & down when you use apps? The reason is the CPU on your laptop is fairly low spec so a high CPU usage isn't necessarily a surprise but it all depends on how the CPU is maxing out.

Could be Windows Search? If so, you can disable Windows Search in Services (Control Panel - Administrative Tools).

The gadget on the desktop is showing the CPU is running at 100%. There is nothing in task manager that says it is running that much.

It is usually going to 100% then back down but this morning it stayed at 100% for roughly 30mins.

I have disabled the Windows Search in Services.
