Installed some new (cheap) software onto laptop. Now it won't start. Gets as far as the windows logo and then says

error [loads of numbers] 197 of [loads more numbers]

and does nothing more. First time it tried to do a repair, and then said that it couldn't do it. Help!

Try booting into "Last known Good" mode.

To do this, turn laptop on. Once the lights come on, tap the F8 key repeatedly (around once per second). Don't mash the key like a demon possessed!

After the power on self test (POST) and before usually where you'd see the windows logo, if you've pressed F8 then you should be presented with a menu. About half way down, you should see an option called "Last Known Good Configuration". Choose that.

If that doesn't work then you could try a system restore but try the above first and let me know if it doesn't work.

Hope that helps

By the way, what was the software?

Wasn't software in the end. Was a system update thingy. Have had to do a complete restore, but was very little data on it anyway as so new.
