I got a mac mini last week, ds set it up and for some reason he set it up with his Apple Id, so that is what it is now called....
is there any way I can change it?

Sorry I clicked on this thinking ooh I love MAC make-up...I am only getting more stupid with age.

Bumping in case someone with sense comes along.

not got a mini, have got a Macbook. I am fairly sure there were all sorts of dire warnings in the initial setup along the lines of "be careful what you type here, this will be what your MAc is called forever" (admittedly in slightly more official langugae Wink

oh hang on - do you mean the Admin name, or the Apple acount it is linked to for itunes/apple store etc?

Assuming you haven't put any data into the computer yet that you would mind losing, do this:

Go to System Preferences/Accounts from the Apple menu

Click on the "+" button at the bottom to create a new account

Click on "Login Options" and set Automatic Login for the new user you have just created, not the old one

Restart the computer

Go back to System Preferences/Accounts and delete the other account.

I'm as mad as the Doctor above !!

As you were...

Do you mean the name that appears on the Login Window at the top of the screen? E.g. "Badgers Paws' Macbook". This is also what other people will see the Macs name as if you're doing any networking at home.

If so changing that is a doddle.

Go into System Preferences and then Sharing and change the "Computer Name" field.

prism · 12/05/2011 16:23

The computer's network name and the long user name are two different things. In total there are four things:

The computer's network name, eg "Badgers Paws' MacBook" (appears at the top of the Finder window that shows the whole computer)
The user long name, eg "Badgers Paws" (appears at the top of the screen on the right)
The user short name, eg "badgerspaws"
The user's Home folder; "badgerspaws"

You can change the computer's network name and the user long name with impunity, but if you mess with the user short name or the name of the Home folder you will appear to lose all your data. So if you want it to say "Joe Bloggs" at the top of the screen and you aren't bothered about the fact that your Home folder still says "badgerspaws", you're fine. If you want to change that as well, it's much more complicated.
