Is there any way to modify how the iPhone autocorrects?

I can't answer your question I'm afraid but you might want to take a look at this thread and then text very carefully

You can reset the dictionary so it will forget all the words that you've taught it, handy it you've entered something wrong at some point:
Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Keyboard Dictionary

Or you can turn it off, handy if it just gets on your nerves :)

Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Auto-Correction -> Off

Weeping with mirth - struggling to breathe and control pelvic floor at the sane time!

I would have assumed most of them were fakes, were it not for some of the texts I sent when my iPhone was new and I hadn't yet realised it had auto-correct BlushGrin

OK, I'll reset the dictionary and sacrifice the words it has learned - like my RL and MN names, buthow did I teach it them in the first place?

And why TF has it learned to put ^s around teach?

Testing: teach

Good.

Thanks.

"did I teach it them in the first place?"

Yes, it learns the words that you ignore the spelling fix for. It thinks "ah-ha, to my user that's a genuine word, I can help them out by suggesting it next time and not complaining about it again".

Oh thank you thank you!! I thought you couldn't turn autocorrect off. It totally drives me nuts and never works when you need it to!!

PrettyCandles · 10/05/2011 18:43

But then why doesn't it unlearn new auto-corrections that I ignore? I suspected it might be something like what you describe, because it was putting ^s around certain words, so I wasted 20minutes entering and re-entering those words and rejecting the auto-corrections, but it did not stop auto-correcting them.

So we're not going to find some examples from you on that website then? Wink

I can't stop looking it -there are some real corkers on there!

BadgersPaws · 10/05/2011 19:29

"But then why doesn't it unlearn new auto-corrections that I ignore?"

Once it's learned something it doesn't want to unlearn it until you tell it to unlearn everything.
