I need to sort out renewing my pc security. I currently use McAfee and have looked on their web site, but it's about £50 for a year. Some people I know rely totaly on the free security downloads, such as AVG etc. My computer knowledge is pretty limited so I need something reliable, easy to install and not too expensive!

All recommendations/comments gratefully received.

AVG is usually rated as one of the best. Just happens to have a free version and a paid for version.

I have AVG free and Malwarebytes Anti Malware.
With both of those and a firewall obviously, you are pretty much covered by the usual virus/trojan gubbins on the net.

we used free AVG for years, and never had a problem with it.

it can be a little tricky to find the free version, but was worth it, imo. once installed, and set up (automatic scanning and updating etc) it worked absolutley fine for us.

Thanks both. I've looked on Amazon and if I follow the link to McAfee I can get the Internet Security 2011 for £24.99 but if I try to install it, I don't get a UK option. By going through 'my account' with McAfee the same product is £39.99.

Think I may just stick with the free AVG - even the computer bloke who fixed the ones in work says that it's fine!

I have tried AVG, but can I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials (it is also free) as we have had good experiences with it so far?

AVG is fab. I loathe McAfee and find it takes up a huge amount of disk space and slows your pc down. I've used AVG for years, along with spybot search and destroy to get rid of malware. link to free edition here

I bit the bullet and downloaded AVG. It did a complete computer scan and all is OK so far, although my PC was ridiculously slow during the scan. I'm hoping that's just because it was the first one!

I got a warning earlier - regarding something that was contained within a file or something - with options such 'move to virus vault' 'ignore' etc. If only I knew which one to choose! My PC skills are pretty basic when it comes to things like this, as you can tell. Will persevere with AVG and see how I get on, and have a look at Microsoft Security Essentials as well.

There's just too much choice! Thanks to all.

Another question - sorry - should I uninstall the McAfee now? The AVG menu gives a choice whether to scan with AVG or with AVG/McAfee - totally confusing to me!

Get rid of McAfee. If you're not sure of something that's picked up, always move it to virus vault, at least it's locked and safe.

Get rid of McAfee: you need to follow all the steps here.

I cannot think of a good reason to use AVG rather than Microsoft Security Essentials.
