Need a clever computer type bod

When I turn my laptop on it says it was turned off improperly (or words to that effect) and gives me the option for safemode.

If I continue as normal and/or in safe mode it does the same thing. Black screen with a mouse that moves.

Tried turning off then on and pressing f2. And went into system diagnostics. Start up test fails and says its the memory. Gives me a website to look at but I'm a) not clever enough to understand it b) can't actually see anything that is an answer

Any ideas?

I think it's programmed to self-destruct as its 2 days out of it warranty

If it helps and is any relevance the error log says the start up test failed 3 times. Twice - memory module 2 and once- hard disk 1

I don't know what any of it means so can't even tell if I've killed it. I need to know before I admit anything to dh

I don't know but I find googling the exact error msg solves most of my computer problems.

It does sound like it's a hardware problem, that is to say something that's physically wrong with the machine rather than a problem with Windows. Some more detail on exactly what it says the errors are would help a lot.

If it failed the memory test then its probably a memory chip that is a bit loose or has stopped working. That is not normally too awful a problem as memory is not expensive and usually quite easy to replace. Most laptops have a panel underneath that gives you easy access to the memory.

Can you find someone who knows how to replace the memory? Sometimes just taking the little cards out and putting them back in again solves the problem. If not, a new memory chip is in the order of £30, depending what type it is.

Well I've kind of solved it.
I have lost everything since my last bacjk up though but better than no laptop
I have no idea what caused it and it does crash about once a day still but it's alive and kicking
