My mum has given me £400 to by mu soon to be 14 yo DS a laptop. I have no idea about these things. He'll (hopefully!) be using it mainly for homework, and gaming. Can anyone advise what I should be looking for in terms of memory size, and, er, other stuff?! Argos seem to have good deals on at the mo, but I want to get this purchase as right as I can> Thanks.

I have had a couple of Samsung laptops that have been well-made, so what about this one?

A couple of alternatives... one is about 50 quid cheaper (allows for extras that might be wanted to add to the laptop, eg a memory stick, or external backup disk drive, or MP3 player :) )

Or slight compromise on speed and memory but a bigger screen and full keyboard with number pad:

Thanks for you both for your replies.

I think the Ebuyer one is a bit more than 50 quid cheaper :)

At 14, ultra-high speed should not be so essential (it will mean that at 16/17 when starting A levels, the chance of a new laptop which is faster will be seen as a big improvement, ITSWIM) and saved cash can go into other stuff - external 500 GB drive, for example, or towards a 20++ inch flat screen TV which can take a VGA input so viewing something from iPlayer or playing a DVD can be done on a larger screen for enjoying with friends (on a sleepover) or family (eg video clip from a mobile phone)...
