I have a Garmin Nuvi 1340 sat nav.

Is there a way to preview the route before you go? Like see it all on a map or something, to find out if it's taking you a particular way when there are various choices? (or even better, allow you to choose which way you want it to go, without having to set multiple 'via' points).

If you get no response here, you might try using the Products section to post your query - both areas get discussion of 'geeky' things, though the Products section usually gets lots general purpose items under discussion and fewer 'gadgets' IYSWIM...

We have some sort of garmin (dh is out in the car, so can't check which model) and you can set it to avoid motorways, or to go the quickest/ most direct route.

You can also see a larger area by tapping the screen, I think.

ok thanks, might try products as well.

I've now kind of worked out the tapping screen thing - it's quite slow to respond and you have to press quite firmly. Still hard to really preview the route well though, when what I often want is to see part of it in detail - like how they are getting me through the unknown town to get to my friend's house, for example, when she has said things like 'don't take the first exit, wait for the second, and then don't go through the centre, turn at the garage and then...' and I can't be navigating those sorts of directions and driving at the same time - that's why I got a sat nav! So I'd like to set it the way I want it to go, because invariably it does take me in at the first exit and through the centre of town, or whatever.

I can set it to avoid motorways now, which is helpful, but would like slightly more control over it, other than just having to drive my own way and let it recalculate - that takes too much knowledge on my part while driving of which way is the best to go, and also it doesn't recalculate all that helpfully, spending a lot of time trying to get me back to the junction that it wanted me to take.

The other day I was somewhere and the road was closed that it wanted me to go on, and no matter how else I tried to go, it kept trying to get me to go back to that junction. I had a map, and I could follow the diversion signs to an extent, but I still found it quite hard (I'm a new driver, and it takes all my concentration to drive, not navigate!). I'd like to be able to just tell it with one button press or something - NO - I can't go that way, or something. Or to be able to pull off, and reset it with a different route.

There is a diversion function, at least on my Garmin. I haven't used it and I'd have to check the manual to see how it works.

You can also set "via" points by going back to the main screen and entering a new location. It should then ask if you want to change the destination or go via the new location.
