I mean porn really?

A colleague is plagued with a virus (or plural) and only him.

No, not just porn sites. There are many other sites (most of which are dodgy) where you can get them from.

But there are also many other ways you can get them. For example, a legit site which was hacked. Or a friend posts a dodgy link on Facebook. A friend of mine was infected the other day and it was randomly posting dodgy looking links on Facebook claiming they were photos of us. If I wasn't so paranoid, I may have clicked on it and got infected.

The best defence is to keep your computer patched up to date, never click any dodgy looking link and stay away from dubious looking websites. If a friend posts a link in an email, facebook link or instant message, ask them if its real before clicking on it.

There are many ways that a Windows PC can get a virus, web sites are only one possibility, and porn web sites are a possibility within that possibility.

So yes it could be through a porn site but it could also be through other web sites, infected files, being connected to the internet, an infected USB stick, downloading a trojan etc. etc.

... and links from an innocent enough e-mail or some instant message from a friend.

One client's son infected his PC because someone forwarded a link to a "J Lo screen saver" but it was a nasty that blocked access to anti-virus sites and was a lot cleverer and more difficult to wipe out than most malware.

If it is an office PC it may be best to remove from the office network until it is clean, because right now it may be attempting to hack into other systems on the network.
