My friend is with O2 and has just upgraded to get the new Iphone. She has given me her old Iphone and I am wondering if I can just bung my vodafone contract in it or do I have to get it unlocked, and if so what will it cost me.
I currently have an HTC Legend so have internet access in my contract.
Also, does it work the same with the SD card? Can I just stick the SD card in the iphone and use it straight away.
I'm so crap at these things but I'm so excited to finally have an Iphone I just want to use it NOW!!!

It's a different sized SIM than most phones, so you will probably have to PAC your number and get a new SIM.

But I would ring Vodafone to see for sure!

Your friend will need to get it unlocked by O2 or jailbreak it then unlock. Given O2 will unlock the old Iphone for free, I strongly recommend that he/she does it before you get it.

There's no SD card. Did you mean SIM? Iphones do not have SD card slots.

If it's the old Iphone (given your friend has a new one) then the SIM is the same size. Only the new version 4 uses the microSIM.

The vodafone SIM should work.

Thanks Niceguy. We will take it to O2 to get it unlocked.
I mentioned the SD card because a lot of my photos and stuff were on the SD card on my HTC, I didn't realise you don't need one for the Iphone.
Thanks again

You will need to install iTunes on a computer and instead you sync the iphone with iTunes.

It can be a bit of a pain in the arse using iTunes but then there are good things such as being able to organise playlists, apps etc from a PC without having to fiddle with the phone too much.

As for unlocking, it's probably quicker if he calls them than taking it to a shop who will probably need to call up anyway.

It's not that you don't need an SD card for the iPhone. It can't take one, which means you can't increase the memory.

TBH I'd stick with the HTC Legend and sell the iPhone on eBay.

"TBH I'd stick with the HTC Legend and sell the iPhone on eBay."

Is that the way you'd treat a (generous) gift from a friend ? Shock

I'm no great fan of the iPhone at this time, never having owned one, but if I was given one, I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to offend the donor by flogging it on Ebay and then face some embarrassing questions about how I wasn't using the nice iPhone I'd been given...

Shock at selling it on Ebay. I've wanted an Iphone for ages and have been so jealous of my friend's one. She'd never speak to me again if I flogged it!!
I managed to get it unlocked and the screen repaired for £50 in the end. O2 wanted to charge me £140 and the Istore told me it was illegal to even try Hmm so I went to a little phone shop and they did it for me.
I love it!!!!
Thanks for your help everyone.
