Problem sending email - failue notice from Mailer Daemon?!

I am trying to send an email to a specific contact in a university. I have emailed this person a number of times before with no issues and I met with them there on Monday so know for sure they are still employed in the same role with the same email address.

I last emailed them with no issues last week.

Yesterday I needed to send a message but every single time I try the email is bounced back with a failure notice that says '550 Consult with postmaster or support at your domain or isp [RCPT_TO]'.

I tried to send the message to an alternative contact in the same department and again received the failure notice.

Any suggestions as to what might have caused this? Is it likely to be a problem at my end? I did try to google a solution but everything I read was such technical jargon that I couldn't understand!!

Thanks

If you are able to email other people not at the University then it sounds like its a problem at their end, so not much you can do.

Thanks for replying...been able to send and receive other messages today...oh well...will just have to wait and see if it fixes itself soon.

Seems to have fixed itself...sent last message around an hour ago and touch wood no rejection notice. Fingers Crossed!

SMTP Error Codes - may help explain what is happening.

5xx - Fatal error encountered, Mail server cannot process request.
x5x - Refers to the status of the mail system as a whole and the mail server in particular.
550 - The requested command failed because the user's mailbox was unavailable.

So sounds like you were getting an error due to the server having a major tantrum. It has now finished having a tantrum and is back on task of delivering mail to users.

nannynick Glad the university website has finished having a tantrum! Smile Nearly five hours now with no rejection - or any reply from the member of staff but I am guessing they will have a backlog of messages to work their way through if there has been a server tantrum.

Thanks!
