I have a yukky google redirect thing going on. Plus internet explorer keeps dying on me for no reason. I've done:
sophos anti rootkit
malwarebytes anti malware
spybot search and destroy
McAfee on demand scan

found few piddly things and removed them, thought I'd fixed in last night (was so smug!) but no, it was all a mirage, the laptop is still not well.

Any advice anyone, please!?

OK what is the Google redirect thing? What exactly happens?

Which version of Windows and Internet Explorer do you have?

Do you get any error when Internet Explorer crashes?

Have you tried using a different browser such as Firefox?

tigana · 23/03/2011 16:49

I google something, click on the link in the google search results and instead of taking me there it redirects me to some other dodgy dodgy search page ( lots of diff ones). If I keep trying eventually i get where i want to, or i hav eto type the address in the bar at the top and go direct.

have downloaded firefox and set as defauly but it just popped back to IE...Confused

when it crashes it come up with that msg box that says " internet expolorer has encountered an error an dhad to close" I think it also says something about 'to protect your computer".

not sure what version...i'll check

Which version of IE? If IE starts then go to the help menu and select "about internet explorer".

But that when you try and use Firefox it pops straight back to IE suggests that something quite funny is going on...

I did a system restore 2 to 3 weeks ago... and went back 2 to 3 weeks... it didn't help... I not sure how far back I'd need to go?

Try avoiding Internet Explorer and just using Firefox.

You could try reinstalling IE8 (download it here: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home) and that might nudge something that will sort it out.

An issue is that we have very little to go on that could help someone work out what's going on. If there are any errors popping up please let us know exactly what they say, the smallest detail could give the clue to track this down.

Also have a look in your computers event viewer (Start/Programs/Admin tools/Event Viewer) and then go into the "Application" and "System" areas on the left hand side. Are there any errors there? What are they?
