Photo Editor problems

Why would ms Photo Editor become selective about which pictures it will open ? They are all .jpg files uploaded from same camera at various times but am getting an "Error reading file" message when trying to open some. Can still copy them into Word etc and they are definitely in the folder.

A file can be hidden inside a JPG. I am wondering if perhaps a virus has done that. Have you done a virus scan recently?

Not sure what else it could be... maybe some corruption with something particular to MS Photo Editor, such as it not recognising the filetype.

Do they open in another editor?

I don't think that the files are corrupted, if they were they wouldn't open in anything and if I'm reading the OP right they work fine in Word.

Which version of Windows and Photo Editor are you using?

Some older versions of Photo Editor have problems opening "big" photos. What is the size, the size of the file on disk not the pixels, of the photos you're opening? Do smaller files open while bigger ones fail?

Windows xp and Photoeditor 3.0.2.3 I think ! Funnily the one it would open was 1mb and the others larger but today it decide to open them, after I'd restarted pc - weird.

Yes I think that that does have some known issues with bigger files. But that you're able to open them know suggests that it's not a constant issue but something that happens now and again.

It might be worth downloading another photo editor, Google Picassa is meant to be pretty good, the MS one has a reputation as being a bit flakey...

I think the MS one has memory issues, when you close an item down it doesn't always give all the memory back so effectively causes a memory leak. As BP says Picassa is good. If you need to use the Photoeditor try rebooting the pc and only opening the editor, then edit the big files first.
